Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Built in 1858, this lighthouse which clings to the side of a red rock cliff on Mount Desert Island is considered to be one of the most picturesque lighthouses in America. Best views of it are from a boat, but there is a path down the side of the cliff that rewards the adventurous with great views of the light and the channel. The original fourth-order Fresnel lens is still in place.
