Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse on a breakwater ledge in Casco Bay, at Portland Harbor, Portland, Maine, was established in 1897. It is one of only a few of the "sparkplug" type lights in Maine. Though they are considered to look like the ignition spark plugs used gasoline or diesel engines, they are designed to handge extreme weather, including gale-force winds, tremendouse waves, ice and whatever stresses nature can invent. The original light has stood against these forces for more than a century, while guiding mariners past the long breakwater shielding Portland Harbor.
