Kites flying in Bug Light Park, in Portland, Maine, at the site of the Portland Breakwater Lighthouse. The Portland Breakwater, built in 1831 in reaction to a destructive storm, helped to protect the harbor, but was difficult for mariners to see. The Portland Breakwater Light, only 26 feet tall, was built in 1855 to warn mariners of the presence of the Breakwater Ledge. The light was extinguished in 1942, but was relit in 2002.
